EVADO™ is the latest innovation in low-level light therapy (LLLT), utilizing the power and efficiency of LEDs to restore the youthful appearance of your skin.

EVADO™ is not a laser treatment: it is a much milder form of skin care. LEDs of specific wavelengths have been shown to stimulate many characteristics of healthy, youthful skin. They can increase circulation, ensuring your skin receives the nutrients it needs to maintain a youthful luster. In addition, LLLT has been show to stimulate the production of collagen, one of the essential characteristics of elastic, healthy skin that tends to decrease with age. These and other aspects of EVADO™ LLLT can help your skin, damaged by sun or age, to restore itself to a more youthful appearance. It can reduce the appearance of:

• Fine lines
• Wrinkles
• Age spots
• Acne
• Sun damage
• Hyperpigmentation (such as age or sun spots)
• Rosacea

The result is a fresher, younger appearance.

To learn more about the benefits of EVADO™, please contact the Centre Yourself Med Spa for an appointment at our Elkhart or Mishawaka location.

What to Look for in a Medical Spa

There are many medical spas available, but finding the right one can be a challenge. Here are a few things to look for when selecting a medical spa:

• Not just a spa. When choosing a medical spa, commonly referred to as a med spa, both components are important. A spa is a great place to relax, but if you are looking to improve your mind and body health, you want to make sure the treatments are guided by sound medical principles. A med spa augments the traditional wisdom and remedies used by standard spas with medical knowledge that helps them to be used to maximum effect. Look for spas that have not just technicians, but nurses and even doctors on staff.
• Technique and technology. Some med spas go too far into the medical technology and they lose the human touch. If a med spa is all about chemicals and lasers, it is missing the other vital component: the healing touch that calms and soothes. Never underestimate the power of properly skilled human hands for relaxing your spirit and refreshing your soul.
• A full range of treatments. Remember the adage: "If you're a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." If you work with a med spa that has only a limited number of treatments available, those are the treatments they'll give you, even when they're not appropriate. At a med spa that has only lasers, people are likely to be given long courses of laser treatments even if what they really need is a facelift. Work with a med spa whose personnel have a wide range of experience and training so you will get the right treatment for your skin and the results you desire.

At Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa, we combine the best in medical technology with the most proven traditional techniques for improving the appearance and health of your skin, body, and spirit. We also offer a full range of treatments, including our exclusive line of Centre Yourself Cosmeceuticals and plastic surgery procedures, so you know you will always have access to just the right treatment for you and your cosmetic goals.

We invite you to schedule an appointment at the Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa and learn for yourself the advantages our med spa offers.

Health Benefits of Massage

Massage has long been part of what is often described as "Oriental" medicine. The original proponents of massage enthusiastically endorsed its health benefits (see our blog on Swedish massage to learn more). However, as "Occidental" medicine moved more toward surgical and pharmaceutical techniques, massage was left behind. People are coming to better appreciate the value of a combination of treatments, including the everyday health benefits of massage.

As we have come to studying massage, it turns out that clinical studies show massage has significant benefits in terms of:

• Stress relief
• Blood pressure reduction
• Anxiety and depression
• Boosting immunity
• Pain
• Joint stiffness
• Cancer treatment
• Infant growth

You can see that many of the conditions listed here have a significant psychological component, and many of the benefits of massage are beyond what can be easily quantified. If you want to look and feel your best, we encourage you to add massage to your routine.

If you are looking for more than “just another spa”, a place where health and beauty go hand in hand, and treatments ranging from completely noninvasive to surgical are all brought together, we invite you to visit Centre Yourself Medical Spa. Thus began the first French Revolution, the one that would depose King Louis XVI and erect the first of many unstable republics.

But this was not the only revolution happening in France at this time. During the late eighteenth century, French society was changing in a way that would transform the world. French society was becoming the first in the world to adopt and promote commercial cosmetics, and through them to transform the role of women in society. And though the French Republics have been notoriously unstable, the impact of French innovation and culture on cosmetics and the role of women has been lasting.

Modern cosmetics were essentially invented in France in the late eighteenth century. In the Medieval and Renaissance periods, people made cosmetics at home from local ingredients, but after 1750 manufactured cosmetics began to be made with purer ingredients, some of them imported from what was known as the "Orient," primarily the Middle East. The Orient was also used as a marketing tool, "Harem women, chosen by the sultan for his pleasure, represented true beauty" in the words of critic Morag Martin, in Selling Beauty: Cosmetics, Commerce, and French Society 1750-1830.

Although women at this point were subject to masculine control, and were encouraged to present themselves for masculine judgment, cosmetics also represented a freedom they had not previously enjoyed. Prior to the advent of commercial cosmetics, only noblewomen could afford to use make up made with fine imported ingredients that gave them richer colors, smoother textures, and an overall more attractive appearance. Commercial cosmetics, though, allowed peasants and shop girls to present themselves on the streets of Paris with the same rouged cheeks, the same powdered skin, the same painted lips that Marie Antoinette herself enjoyed, giving French women greater class mobility and helping to destabilize the last vestiges of feudal society.

Our own line of Centre Yourself Cosmeceuticals can trace their origins to this period, because it was during this time that cosmetics and medicine were most closely allied. Half the beauty manuals published between 1750 and 1818 were written by doctors. Doctors helped women to sort through the multitude of advertised products to determine which ones promoted health as well as beauty.

At the Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa, we are happy to take this Bastille Day to celebrate the ongoing legacy of French cosmetics: Freedom, beauty, and health. Liberté, beauté, santé!

To learn more about cosmetics that actually protect and promote the health of your skin, please contact the Centre Yourself Medspa today for a consultation.

What Is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage, like many national monikers, is something of a misnomer. Although the massage was championed by Swedish physician Henri Peter Ling in the early 1800s, the techniques it uses are derived from traditional cures applied in many "Oriental" countries. Its adoption is one of the latter parts of the Orientalist movement that inspired a number of fashions in Britain and Europe in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In most languages, this is described more simply as "classic massage" or similar nomenclature because it is among the most basic of massage techniques.

In Swedish massage, the goal is to improve circulation and lymph drainage, reduce pain, and relax the mind and body. There are five basic strokes, all flowing toward the heart, that are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The disrobed client is covered by a sheet, with only the area being worked on exposed. Therapists use a combination of kneading, rolling, vibrational, percussive, and tapping movements, with the application of oil or cream, to reduce friction on the skin. The many benefits of Swedish massage can include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury. A Swedish massage is overall gentle, soothing and relaxing, which makes it a great choice for beginners!

Anyone who is in good overall health is a candidate for Swedish massage. After a Swedish massage, you will likely feel more relaxed, have greater freedom of movement and less tension in your muscles. You may also experience a reduction in your body's overall retention of environmental toxins, which could lead to a reduced risk of cancer, arthritis and other conditions, although this has not been clinically established.

To learn more about Swedish and other types of massage, please contact Centre Yourself Medical Spa today to schedule your initial consultation at our Elkhart or Mishawaka office.

Prepare Your Skin for Summer Exposure

As spring warms into summer, it's time to break out the sleeveless sun dresses and get ready for swimsuit season. But what's the best way to ensure you have healthy, glowing skin that you'll love to show off? Here are a few tips to look your best at the beach or by the pool:

Exfoliate – Dry winter weather is hard on your skin. Chances are you’re wearing a shell of dead, dull skin. Emerge from that chrysalis with gentle chemical peels or laser resurfacing.

Moisturize – Now that you've exposed the layer of youthful, healthy skin below the surface, it's time to make sure it keeps its glow. Give your skin the moisture and nutrients it needs to thrive. We can recommend a number of excellent moisturizers clinically designed to target your skin's needs. Choose from our own line of Centre Yourself Cosmeceuticals or other medical skin care lines.

Ease into the Sun – If you suddenly expose your skin to the sun with full day outings, you're likely to get burned. Start out with a little bit of sun exposure every day. Remember to buy new physical block sunscreen and apply it as directed. Also, remember that self-tanners give no protection against sunburns. Tanning beds are also bad for your skin. There's nothing like natural sunshine to get you the tan you desire.

Remove Unwanted Hair – If you've been neglecting to shave your legs all winter, getting back into the habit of shaving can be challenging and uncomfortable. Laser hair removal is an excellent alternative.

Don't Forget Your Feet – Your feet work hard every day and might need a little extra care to get them looking great for sandals season. When you've got them looking great, consider picking a new bright shade of nail polish to call attention to your hard work.

At The Centre Yourself Medical Spa, we have the tools to help your skin look its best in every season. To learn more, please schedule an appointment at our Elkhart or Mishawaka location.

Look Fresh-Faced for Spring

Though winter seems intent on holding on this year, spring is right around the corner! Fresh flowers and greens are sitting just below the earth’s surface, waiting to rejuvenate our parks and yards, just as our skin’s deepest layers are ready to revitalize our appearances, giving us a fresh and healthy glow for spring. The most traditional treatment remains one of the best. That’s right, Facials and light chemical peels are IDEAL for restoring your youthful glow, and can also minimize wrinkles!

For more significant facial rejuvenation, check out Pearl laser skin resurfacing. This treatment removes the outer layers of damaged skin, which allows new cells to form and provide healthier, tighter, younger-looking skin. It does, however, require a few days to heal and may require some time off work. For rejuvenation without downtime, we recommend Pearl fractional resurfacing. This process creates hundreds of micro-wells in the skin that reach down to the rejuvenating layers and creates an instant healing response.

If you would like to look as fresh-faced as spring herself this year, contact the Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa to schedule a consultation and find the right treatment for you.

Makeup Trends at the Oscars

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> open the awards season, the Oscars are its culmination, and this year the makeup trends did a full reversal between the two events. Where the Globes had dramatic smoky eyes and bold lip colors, the makeup on the red carpet at the 83rd Academy Awards was noticeably demure, signaling the transition from winter styles to the hot new spring trends. This spring, less is more and 70s natural is the fashion.

To be sure, there were a few stand-outs like Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway who bucked the trend with bright colors, but these women were following their personal style more than the fashion trend, Scarlett adhering to her penchant for dramatic eye makeup and Hathaway emphasizing the ivory look she prefers with bold red lipstick.

However, the dominant look was pure and natural. At the far end of the spectrum were Hilary Swank and Halle Barry, who looked like they were wearing almost nothing at all, save some lip gloss and a touch of shadow. Marisa Tomei, Natalie Portman, and Nicole Kidman both added a hint of blush and some subtle lip color, but retained the natural look. At the more made up end of the natural spectrum was Amy Adams who increased the blush, added brighter lips and darker eye makeup to make a dramatic combination that paired nicely with her sparkling blue gown and emerald jewelry.

If you are looking for a skin-healthy option for achieving a subtle, natural look, Jane Iredale cosmetics are a perfect choice.
It's been a long hard, winter, and if you notice that you are suddenly looking older than ever, it may not be your imagination. The cold, dry winter air can really damage your skin, making you look years older in just a matter of months. If looking in your mirror reveals this kind of dramatic change, The Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa can help.

The first priority is to get rid of dead and damaged cells that contribute to the numerous fine wrinkles you see and can make your skin look dull. We have several options that can help you get rid of those damaged surface layers to reveal the fresher, younger skin beneath. Depending on the amount and type of damage, and the character of your skin, we might recommend a facial, chemical peel, or laser skin treatments.

Second, restore your skin's moisture. Winter air can rob precious moisture from your skin. It starts off the Awards season and sets the bar for style and kicks many fashion trends in motion. This year, the Golden Globes were a playful mix of colorful gowns and extravagant make up.

One of the biggest winners, stylewise, was January Jones, who plays divorcee Betty Francis (Draper) on AMC's Mad Men and Emma Frost in the upcoming X-Men: First Class, who caught a lot of attention in her red Versace gown. She contrasted her pale complexion and golden hair with bright red lips and dark lashes. Dark, smoky eyes were a real winner of the evening, accompanying everything from Jones' classic bobbed-under hairdo to Olivia Wilde's and Sandra Bullock's bangs. If you are looking to capture this look, we recommend Jane Iredale's Mystikol Powder Eyeliner Pencil Box. Hypoallergenic and long-lasting with an assortment of colors to help you present a variety of looks, the set includes five pencils in a slender metal case.

Also a big hit were intense lip colors, from Jones' red to the popular pinks used by Amy Adams, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, and others. We have a number of options for women looking for luscious lips worth calling attention to, from dermal filler injections to superficial lip treatments.

And, of course, healthy skin is always commented on. If you are having trouble getting and maintaining a healthy complexion, we can help. Starting with Visia complexion analysis, we can design a course of skin care that may include everything from in office facials to at home treatments using our own line of Centre Yourself Cosmeceuticals.

You may not have any red-carpet events coming up, but if you want to look red-carpet ready, we can help. When you get to your beach destination, the pace of life slows down to match the gentle swells of the waves on the strand. The hours slowly, luxuriously ebb by as the sun rises to pour its golden warmth down on you and the rest of the vacationers spread up and down the long stretch of soft sand. Your time sunbathing is broken only by occasional cooling, playful dips in the ocean and stops for casual meals and drinks.

Although this type of vacation can be deeply rejuvenating for your mind and spirit, it can dramatically age your skin, as sun and sea strip it of moisture and mercilessly pound it with damaging radiation, even if you were good and remembered to reapply your sunscreen regularly. But fear not, at The Centre, P.C. we have a number of ways to rejuvenate your skin to help it look as fresh and young as you feel after your vacation.

First, we can assess the damage using our Visia Complexion Analysis. This allows us to assess how much damage your skin has sustained and make recommendations for how to treat it. Some of the common concerns people have after sun-drenched weeks abroad are dry skin, uneven complexion, and wrinkling. In-office treatments like a facial skin peel can help, and we also offer advanced products that can help you rejuvenate your skin at home.

Advanced Moisturizers

The combination of the sun and salt water can leave your skin painfully dry. Cracking lips and knuckles are just the most visible signs of dry skin. A few examples of the powerful moisturizers we offer are:

PhotoFacials Day Moisturizer by Kinerase

Nu-Derm Exfoderm Forte by Obagi

Brighteners

Brighteners serve to even out the blemishes and spots that come from sun exposure. They can help your tan look young, healthy, and even, not blotchy with freckles. Some of our recommended brighteners are:

Vibrance Therapy by Vivite

Intensive Recovery Complex by Nia 24

Sun Damage Repair by Nia 24

Wrinkle Reducers

Wrinkle reducers are formulated to restore moisture and plump skin, thereby reducing wrinkles. They include retinol, a form of vitamin A that stimulates collagen and elastin production. A couple of recommended wrinkle reducers are:

Retinol Cream 30 by BioMedic

C8 Peptide Intensive Treatment by Kinerase

Of course, these are just a few of the options we offer, and which one is right for you depends on the actual condition of your skin. There are several very common skin problems women are seeking to address with age, many of which can be improved with laser skin treatments.

As women approach age 30 or 40 their main concerns are skin tone (23%) and skin texture (15%). Skin tone and texture can both be addressed with the Cutera Pearl® treatment that removes outer damaged skin layers. They can also be improved with the Pearl Fractional treatment, or with the Pearl® Fusion treatment that combines full resurfacing with deeper fractional resurfacing.

As women approach age 50 or 60, their main concerns become fine lines (30%) and wrinkles (33%). Fine lines and wrinkles generally respond well to Pearl® Fractional treatment. Fine lines and wrinkles also respond to Cutera's Laser Genesis™.

Laser skin treatment is just one of the many options available at Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa. Overexposure to the sun during the summer can lead to permanent damage in the form of sun spots, wrinkles, even skin cancer. To avoid these dangers, here are a few tips to minimize the damage to your skin this summer.

Don't get a base tan at the salon. We know that many people don't want to go to the beach and show themselves in a swimsuit before they've got a tan, but tanning beds have been correlated with significantly higher risks of skin cancer. If you must tan, try getting a base tan at home, or you can take advantage of our Sunmist Spray Tanning to look good for your first day at the beach.

Limit sun exposure during the most intense hours. Try to get under cover when the sun is at its most intense, typically between 10 am and 4 pm.

Pick summer fashions that protect your skin. Everyone loves sleeveless sun dresses with plunging necklines and short skirts. They're cool, fun, and carefree--perfect for recapturing a youthful feeling during the summer. But these outfits can expose a lot of your skin to sun damage, so it's often good to mix up your wardrobe with some light materials that help you keep cool but also block out the sun. A thin, satiny silk blouse, for example, can help you keep cool while protecting you from UV radiation. Also, it may be tempting to just throw on a baseball cap before heading out in the sun, but broad-brimmed hats to a much better job at protecting you from sun exposure.

Use sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection. Make sure your sunscreen protects against the full spectrum of UV radiation. And remember that sunscreen is only a second line of defense--don't depend on it to protect your skin all the time.

Wear mineral-based makeup. Mineral-based make up like Jane Iredale do a better job at protecting your skin than other forms of cosmetics. Even if you don't wear them all year, consider using them during periods of intense exposure.

Replenish your skin's resources. A day in the sun, especially when combined with swimming in the pool or the ocean, can drain your skin of vital oils, moisture, and nutrients, leaving it prone to more damage the next day. When you get in after spending a full day in the sun, it's best to take some time to restore what your skin has lost. We can recommend the best skin care to battle sun damage. We also offer skin treatments that can be used periodically to remove sun-damaged skin and keep a fresh appearance.

To learn more about protecting your skin during the summer, please schedule an appointment at the Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa in Elkhart or South Bend.

Visia Complexion Analysis

Have you ever visited a beautician or spa for help improving the look and feel of your skin, but been unsatisfied? Don't Forget Your Skin

The ritual of spring cleaning helps usher out the doldrums of winter. Especially with a hard winter like the one we just experienced, you may have been inside for what feels like six months straight, and it's time to undo the havoc that cabin fever has wrought on your house. And while you're at it, now is a great time to cleanse your skin for a fresh start on the spring.

It may not seem like it, but the winter sun is as full of damaging UVA rays as the summer sun, so if you did get out, your skin may have suffered significant damage. And if you stayed indoors, that is not necessarily any better for your skin. Indoor air pollution can be as bad as, or worse than, outdoor pollution. Pollutants can be absorbed by your skin or get trapped in the pores, where they may remain and cause long-term damage. And when you break out the cleaning solutions for your spring ritual, you are exposing your skin to even more chemicals. Add to this the effect of dry air from forced-air furnaces, and it's likely this winter was as hard on your skin as on the rest of you.

So we invite you to get your skin freshened up for spring with the cleansing treatments we offer at Centre Yourself medical rejuvenation spa. Start with a relaxing and nourishing facial, which can clean your skin and help restore its brilliant glow. For a deeper cleaning that can also address skin damaged by dryness or sun, consider a mild chemical peel. And don't think of this as a one-time, or once-a-year thing. Think of it as unfolding a new leaf, and begin a new skin-care regimen with our plethora of skin care products.

So when you've finished scrubbing the oven and have the whole house sparkling, it's time to give your skin a scrub and get a little sparkle for yourself. Please call or email us today to schedule an appointment at our Centre Yourself offices in Elkhart and South Bend.

<link rel='related' href='http://www.thecentrepc.com/cy/cy-index.html' title='Spring Cleaning? Now is not the time to think of retiring from the skin care game. It's never too late to prevent sun damage and to stop the progression of damage you may already have. In your 50s, cell turnover is slow; you'll notice your complexion is drying out and losing elasticity. Expression lines no longer disappear after you stop smiling or squinting; and pores are more visible, especially on the nose and cheeks. You may also notice spider veins and hyperpigmentation (age spots).

Skin Concerns:

Menopause can induce a decline in hormonal levels

Loss of estrogen and progesterone causes a drop in the synthesis of collagen which, in turn, causes loss of elasticity

Dryness due to reduction in oil production

Pores more visible, especially on nose and cheeks

Capillaries noticeable on face

Precancerous spots

Significant sun damage

Skin Care Tips:

If you haven’t been using Retin A, then you should be using it now

Visit your dermatologist or plastic surgeon for skin checks

Use a creamy cleanser

Look for serums containing Vitamin C and peptides

Use a moisturizer that is hydrating, especially ones containing shea butter or squalene, which is derived from olive oil

Night cream is a must

Advanced Healthy Skin Care:

Pearl Laser Resurfacing

Pearl Fractional laser for deeper lines

IPL, like Laser Genesis, to lift sun damage and diminish redness

Botox Cosmetic or Dysport can be used to minimize forehead wrinkles and crows feet.

Dermal fillers, such as Restylane or Perlane, are great for treating lines around the mouth.

Don't give up on proper skin care in your 50s. The changes that started in our 30s are amplified as our skin becomes drier and the collagen and elastin continue to break-down.

Skin Concerns in Your 40s

Bags under the eyes.

Deeper lines and wrinkles (if you sleep on your side, wrinkles in that area may be increased).

Increased sun spots, redness, and vascularity.

Acne due to hormonal changes can occur.

Some increased dryness and cell turnover slows down.

At-Home Healthy Skin Care

Glycolic acid based wash or cream can help increase cell turnover.

Moisturizers with humectant ingredients, such as hylauronic acid and glycerin, attract water in the skin.

Retin A use is essential.

Opt for a satin pillowcase.

If acne is a concern, use an adult acne product that is non-drying. Signs of aging will begin to show with fine lines & expression lines appearing around the mouth, eyes, and forehead. If you are a hyper-animator, these lines may be deeper.

Skin Concerns in Your 30s

Skin can become drier. The skin's ability to retain water decreases in your 30s.

Loss of collagen and elastin begins, which leads to sagging. Previous exposure to UVA & UVB rays in your 20’s will worsen laxity.

Sun damage accrued in the teens & 20’s will begin to come out on the face. The more tanning one has done the more dark spots and sun damage will appear. If not corrected, it will worsen.

Women may also be concerned about Melasma, AKA, the “pregnancy mask”, which is dark pigmentation on the skin and is a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy. UV exposure will make melasma worse.

Healthy Skin Tips
There are some definite steps to take to help you have healthy skin during this decade.

Continue your skin care regimen, cleanse, tone, & moisturize, with the addition of an antioxidant (examples: Vitamin C, green tea, pomegranate). Now is the time to really begin looking into anti-aging products.

Routine microderms and chemical peels should begin in the 30s. This will increase cell turnover, which begins to slow down leading to dull, uneven skin tone.

Many women at this age start to consider Botox Cosmetic or fillers. Botox or Dysport will “freeze” the muscle and is used on forehead and between the brows.

Dermal fillers “plump up” the skin and will fill in deep lines, especially around the mouth.

Retin A use should continue and be used every other evening. You'll want to shed long pants in favor of breezy short skirts, sun dresses, and shorts, not to mention swimsuits. If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your legs, you may feel less enthusiastic about the coming season. But never fear, Centre Yourself Medical Spa offers solutions for you.

If you are like many women, cellulite is a persistent problem. It doesn't matter whether your weight is up or down--cellulite is not a function of weight--nor how many leg lifts you do--cellulite is not a function of muscle tone--it will not go away. But at Centre Yourself, we offer a treatment for cellulite. Endermologie is a combination of mechanical massage and suction to stimulate the skin and tissues in affected areas, and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

If you do not like the look of spider veins on your legs, which can contribute to an aged or unattractive appearance, we also offer laser treatments for vascular lesions and spider veins. After a series of short treatments, the spider veins will be virtually erased. We also offer chemical sclerotherapy, which uses injections to remove spider veins.

Just like the skin on your face, the skin on your legs changes with age. If the skin on your legs is dry or dull, we recommend a chemical peel to restore a smooth, soft, youthful appearance to your legs.

Finally, if you want to permanently reduce the need to shave or wax your legs, laser hair removal is a great option. Although it does not lead to permanent hairlessness, it does lead to temporary hairlessness, and once you have completed a cycle of treatments, any hairs that return are likely to be paler and finer than before.

No matter what the current state of your legs, there is no reason why you should fear the onset of summer. At Centre Yourself, we offer beauty treatments that will help you feel more confident showing off your legs this year. Please call or email us today to schedule an appointment at our Elkhart or South Bend office.

Skin Care Concerns in Your 20s

- by Kim, Licensed Aesthetician

Coco Chanel said that “Nature gives you the face you have at 20. Life shapes the face you have at 30. But at 50, you get the face you deserve.”

Good skin care habits should have been established in your teens, so by the time one reaches their 20s, skin needs only routine care. Skin should be dewy, moist, and radiant. Prevention is really the KEY at this time in your life.

Skin Care Concerns
By your mid 20s, skin starts to lose it ability to retain water. Also by the late 20s, there is 1/4 less oxygen in our blood being transported to the skin.

Most women at this age are concerned with:

Losing the healthy glow and color of their skin

Acne that has continued on past their teens

Skin either too oily or too dry

Repairing damage already done to their skin

Healthy Skin Tips
Avoid tanning beds!!! This is not the time to be tanning. During this decade artificial tanning will increase risk of malignant melanoma by 75%.

According to dermatologists, 80% of all aging can be directly related to sun exposure. Fine lines, wrinkling, and sagging are all effects of tanning.

Get in the habit of using an SPF of 30 or higher on a daily basis.

Cumulative sun exposure will end up on your face. Tan now, wrinkled later.

Cleanse, tone, & moisturize: Now is the time to start a skin care routine - every day! Use gentle products and focus on damage prevention. Don’t be concerned about anti-aging products just yet. Save your money and get a facial or chemical peel instead.

Do not sleep in makeup! This can lead to clogged pores and creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

Skin Exfoliation: Exfoliate at least once a week with gentle scrub and an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid 1 time each month.

Vitamin A: Begin using a low dose Retin A every other evening. This is a derivative of Vitamin A that works by increasing skin cell turnover, helping in the treatment and prevention of whiteheads and blackheads.

If you establish good habits early on, they will carry over into later life. Many people have requested us to take a look at anti-wrinkle products and treatments to see if they are effective or not.

Do Over-the-Counter Wrinkle Creams Really Work?
Many wrinkle creams and lotions sold in department stores, in drugstores and on the internet promise to reduce wrinkles and prevent or reverse damage caused by the sun.

Do they work? They may slightly improve the appearance of your skin, but if you’re looking for a face-lift in a bottle, you probably won't find it in over-the-counter (non-prescription) wrinkle creams.

And here’s why. Consider these points when judging the merits of using a wrinkle cream:

The FDA classifies creams and lotions as cosmetics, which are defined as having no medical value. This means the FDA does not allow medically-active products to be sold in department stores. Over-the-counter wrinkle creams contain lower concentrations of active ingredients than do prescription creams. So results, if any, are limited and usually short-lived.

Research suggests that certain ingredients may improve wrinkles, which we will talk about. However, over-the-counter products are not evaluated by the FDA for effectiveness.

In addition, cosmetics companies are not rash enough to allow a product which actually changes the fundamental structure of the skin to be sold by someone not trained in skin care. It would be a liability nightmare.

Also cost has no relationship to effectiveness. Just because a wrinkle cream is more costly, may not mean that it's more effective than a less-costly product.

Effective Ingredients for Wrinkle Treatment
The effectiveness of a wrinkle creams depends in part on the active ingredients. Here are some common ingredients that may result in slight to modest improvements in wrinkles.

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). These natural fruit acids lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes. Among the most widely known are glycolic and lactic acid. New evidence shows that in higher concentrations, AHAs may help stimulate collagen production.

Retinoids (Vitamin A). The only FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles is tretinoin, known as Retin A. This prescription cream can reduce fine lines and large wrinkles, and repair sun damage. It has the longest track record of success in treating aging skin and fine lines.

Antioxidants. These include preparations that contain the vitamins A, C, and E, as well as beta-carotene. Such creams may provide a certain amount of sun protection as well as mild improvement of fine wrinkles.

Coenzyme Q10. This naturally-occurring antioxidant is a nutrient that helps regulate energy production in cells. Some studies have shown reduction in fine wrinkles around the eyes with no side effects. Other studies show that application before sun exposure protects against sun damage.

Copper Peptides. Copper is a trace element found in every cell. In products applied to the skin, it’s combined with small protein fragments called peptides. Copper peptides enhance wound healing. They also stimulate production of collagen and may enhance the action of antioxidants.

Topical Vitamin C. Studies have found it can increase collagen production, protect against damage from UVA and UVB rays, correct pigmentation problems, and improve inflammatory skin conditions. The key, however, may be the type of vitamin C used. To date, most of the research points to the L-ascorbic acid form as the most potent for wrinkle relief.

Tea Extracts. Green, black and oolong tea contain compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea extracts are the ones most commonly found in wrinkle creams.

In summary, over-the-counter products may contain a small percentage of these active ingredients, but not enough for long-term benefit. Our final part of this wrinkle trilogy will discuss treatments that are proven to improve wrinkles. These non-surgical alternatives are all available at our medical spa, Centre Yourself.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v18.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D7486ef9c307489a9%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330047346%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D3CD6771B8B748089C1CA09E7AB11679459DA2B99.44815E095DD616A82AC42A49CB34AA10EF61F14D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7486ef9c307489a9%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DSRX56eatYtes2xn6emPl14F8DxM&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

What Factors Promote or Cause Wrinkles?

Although wrinkles can signify wisdom and a lifetime of experience, most people would rather not have them. Many people want to know what causes wrinkles and what can be done to reduce their appearance. So today we will discuss how wrinkles develop and in the next post we'll really take a look at anti-wrinkle products and treatments to see if they are effective or not.

So What Are Wrinkles?
Most of us know what wrinkles are. They are those fine surface lines and deep furrows or creases that develop on the surface our skin. Most wrinkles appear on the parts of the body where sun exposure is greatest, including the face, neck, backs of the hands, and tops of the forearms.

What Factors Promote or Cause Wrinkles
Age: As we age, the dermis layer of our skin loses 2 things:

Elastin – which is the fiber that gives our skin its elastic quality.

Collagen – which is a protein that helps our skin stay firm and flexible.

This causes the skin to become thinner and not hold moisture as well – creating wrinkles.

Environmental Factors: Sun and tanning bed UV radiation damages both collagen and elastin, and also causes skin cancer. Dozens of studies document this as the #1 cause of wrinkles and aging skin. When out in the sun, wear sunscreen with SPF 25 or higher.

Smoking: Don’t smoke or stop smoking. Studies indicate that cigarette smoke dries out the skin and releases a chemical that damages collagen and elastin.

Sleep: When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells and makes the skin thinner. Also, when you get enough rest your body produces hormones which help the skin remain thick and more elastic.

Genetics: DNA and heredity play a factor in whether you will develop wrinkles. For example, lighter skin types are more susceptible to sun damage and some families are just more prone to develop wrinkles.

Lines of Expression: These are developed differently from other wrinkles. When we flex and use our muscles, such as a facial expression, a groove forms under the surface of the skin. When you are young the skin springs back, but as we get older our skin is less flexible. It doesn’t spring back completely and a permanent groove, or wrinkle, is formed.

Loose, sagging or excess skin is often confused with wrinkles. But this is an entire topic in itself and we will discuss it in a separate column.

Next post, we’ll look at how to help these problems and examine over-the-counter anti-wrinkle creams. Perhaps even shatter a few myths.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v22.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D154af7a82c17bb3e%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330047346%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D3F843D26E9F91B484C93350076147CF731774A2D.F18E312AB935836A81D503C749F1D2BB3B1F16A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D154af7a82c17bb3e%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DOER0kwcBIDU8dh5wV65ZGPovVcs&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Managing Dry Winter Skin – Part 2

As we discussed in the last post, the cold dry air of winter can bring an uncomfortable dryness to the skin of our face, hands and feet. For many people this is more than just a general tight, dry feeling. Their skin can get so dry it results in flaking, cracking and even eczema. We have more winter skin care tips to manage dry skin.

Dealing With Low Humidity
As temperatures fall, so do humidity levels, and the loss of moisture can cause your skin to become dry and itchy. Heat from furnaces, radiators, woodstoves, and fireplaces can also suck the moisture out of the air inside your home, which can dry out your skin even more. Put moisture back into the air by using a humidifier.

Exfoliate on a Weekly Basis
Many people think that exfoliation will dry out the skin more. Actually it is great for dry skin! Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and allows moisturizers to be more effective. Use a loofah or body brush before turning on the shower to remove loose skin and to prepare the skin. During your shower use your preferred exfoliating cleanser.

Don’t Forget Your Lips
Your lips are often the first to succumb to cold winter air. Find a lip moisturizer that you like and apply it often. Find an emollient-based moisturizer for the lips that is soothing and has no irritants. I do not recommend products with menthol or phenol as they may be irritating.

Baby Your Hands and Feet
Hands and feet can suffer terribly from dry, itchy skin. Antibacterial soaps can be harsh on the hands. Make sure you moisturize after washing your hands. Also change out of wet gloves and socks as soon as possible. They can irritate your skin and cause itching and cracking.

Here’s an extra tip for the feet: cover your feet in a thick moisturizer, something containing petroleum jelly or glycerine. Then wrap your feet in plastic wrap and put on a pair of old socks. Let them moisturize for a couple hours, then see how nice and soft your feet feel.

See a Specialist
Finally, if your dry skin persists you may want to consult one of our licensed skin care experts. They can analyze your skin type, discuss the problems you are having and recommend an effective skin care regimen. You will have smooth, soft skin in no time.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v5.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D227582f85009b950%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330047346%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7747BDD543508D6C006957AF5E9AF4C4A6EB82AE.545345C1578C0917C4C0D065F91FC549591059A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D227582f85009b950%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Du3vMU9CFW9OGIDSSeo_kAqQnOwc&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Managing Dry Winter Skin - Part 1

Winter brings cold, crisp days, fun seasonal activities, and snowy nights spent by a warm fire. But not all elements of winter are so enjoyable. For one, there’s dry winter skin, which can be exacerbated by the cold winter air outside and warm, dry air inside.

This year, do your best to guard against the factors that cause dry, itchy skin. Start by addressing the factors that irritate dry skin. Consider your indoor and outdoor environments, your skin care regimen, and even what you wear. Let’s start with your morning routine.

Cool Down Your Showers
Very hot water will only dry your skin out more. Lower the temperature of your shower or bath to warm not hot – and the same applies when hand washing. Also try to shorten the length of your shower or bath and only once per day.

Moisturize, Moisture, Moisturize
This is the key to soft, supple skin. And the best time to apply is right after washing. Pat skin dry, instead of rubbing which can remove the skin’s natural oils. You also want to moisturize throughout the day. Then apply an oil-based, rather than water-based, lotion or emollient. The oil will create a protective layer on the skin than helps retain moisture.

Look for oils that are “nonclogging” like avocado, mineral, primrose or almond oils. Also look for lotions containing “humectants” which include glycerine, sorbitol and alpha-hydroxy. These attract moisture to the skin.

Continue Wearing Sunscreen
We’ve discussed this before. Wear sunscreen year ‘round, not just in the summer. The winter sun, combined with snow glare, can still damage and dry-out the skin. You can find moisturizers with built-in sunscreen. Just be sure it is rated SPF 25 or higher.

Be Careful of Overdressing
As you dress for winter weather, remember that it’s not just what you wear, but how much you wear that can irritate your skin. Overdressing in winter can lead to overheating and sweating, which can further aggravate dry skin. If it’s cold outside, dress in layers. You want a light-weight, breathable fabric next to your skin. And beware of “itchy” fabrics. Some people have very sensitive skin that will itch and react with certain fabrics, especially rough ones like wool. Remember that an itchy wool blanket can irritate your skin, too.

Cover Your Skin When Outside
This is another obvious tip, but an important one. Extreme outdoor weather can suck the moisture right out of your skin. Use physical barriers like masks and gloves to protect your skin from wind burn and dry, cold air.
