Skin Care Concerns in Your 50s - Thursday, April 22, 2010

It's never too late to prevent sun damage and to stop the progression of damage you may already have. In your 50s, cell turnover is slow; you'll notice your complexion is drying out and losing elasticity. Expression lines no longer disappear after you stop smiling or squinting; and pores are more visible, especially on the nose and cheeks. You may also notice spider veins and hyperpigmentation (age spots).
Skin Concerns:
- Menopause can induce a decline in hormonal levels
- Loss of estrogen and progesterone causes a drop in the synthesis of collagen which, in turn, causes loss of elasticity
- Dryness due to reduction in oil production
- Pores more visible, especially on nose and cheeks
- Capillaries noticeable on face
- Precancerous spots
- Significant sun damage
- If you haven’t been using Retin A, then you should be using it now
- Visit your dermatologist or plastic surgeon for skin checks
- Use a creamy cleanser
- Look for serums containing Vitamin C and peptides
- Use a moisturizer that is hydrating, especially ones containing shea butter or squalene, which is derived from olive oil
- Night cream is a must
- Pearl Laser Resurfacing
- Pearl Fractional laser for deeper lines
- IPL, like Laser Genesis, to lift sun damage and diminish redness
- Botox Cosmetic or Dysport can be used to minimize forehead wrinkles and crows feet.
- Dermal fillers, such as Restylane or Perlane, are great for treating lines around the mouth.
